hi, i’m hk —
i’m a theatre artist, designer, yoga practitioner and witch.
I’m a white, jewish, non-binary, chronically ill performing artist, designer and intuitive practitioner. I’ve had many lives and many practices, all of which I carry with me. I’ve worked in almost every corner of the entertainment industry in an out of the spotlight including co-writing and directing original theatre and radio drama, working on award-winning television shows and presenting on panels about gender identity and directing. My pronouns are they/them/theirs.
Theatre, yoga, tarot and design may seem disparate, but I see a an essential common thread in them. All of these practices cultivate a keen sense of inquiry. Whether it comes from the images on a tarot card or in the process of writing a play. They all require a type of presence that is hard to come by in our dominant culture. I’m interested in understanding the Self and how we can stay connected to it as we move through the world.
After growing up on Long Island, I received a BFA in Drama from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, where I studied acting at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting and the Experimental Theatre Wing. I also studied Shakespeare in Performance at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, UK and Commedia Dell’Arte in Florence, Italy. In 2016, I co-found BITCRUSHER, a digital theatre collective with the mission to make theatre accessible by streaming plays online. I have directed plays at the New York International Fringe Festival, Dixon Place, Prelude Festival and the John Drew Theatre Lab. My work has been featured in Variety and the New York Times.
Between 2017 and 2019 I co-created the radio drama podcasts A World Where and The Mueller Report: A Radio Dramatization, which have collectively accumulated over 100,000 downloads. At the same time, I worked in New York City’s film and television industry on projects including Ramy (Hulu), Marriage Story (Netflix), Y: The Last Man (FX) and High Fidelity (Hulu).
I’ve practiced yoga since I was 15 years old. Yoga is a South Asian practice that offers tools for self awareness and understanding so that we may move through life in greater alignment with our dharma, or purpose. My relationship with yoga is complicated and I imagine a future where all people, especially people of marginalized bodies, can prioritize their physical autonomy and wellbeing over the obligations of capitalism. I facilitate yoga practices and offer tarot readings from a desire to share tools for inner reflection and understanding with my community. In 2022, I completed 300 hours of yoga teacher training under Susannah Barkataki at the Ignite Institute for Yogic Leadership & Social Change.
In 2023, I co-founded be queer now, a hybrid virtual and in-person yoga collective that offers practices to the queer community in order to deepen our relationships with ourselves and community as we work towards collective liberation. I currently offer semi-regular pop ups classes in-person and online with be queer now and am also available for private yoga sessions.
By day, I work as a designer for Storey Publishing, where I help create books that foster practical skills and harmony with nature. By night you can find me performing in theatre throughout the Seattle, WA region—land historically stewarded by many Coast Salish Peoples.
